Bangladesh to seek UN’s help to tackle travel restrictions hurdle for Women’s T20 World Cup

Bangladesh's new interim government will reach out to the United Nations (UN) over retaining the rights to host Women's T20 World Cup

The new interim government in Bangladesh is planning to engage the United Nations (UN) in discussions over retaining the rights to host the Women’s T20 World Cup. The country, which has witnessed a fresh wave of violence and a change of government, is racing against time to ensure that the arrangements for the marquee event are adequate. The 10-team tournament will be held in Dhaka and Sylhet between October 3-20.

Bangladesh to ask UN for help to host Women’s T20 World Cup

As per Cricket Pakistan, the youth and sports advisor to the government Asif Mahmud confirmed the country’s intentions to bring the UN into the discussion. The report states that Bangladesh were worried about the travel restrictions imposed by other countries in the wake of violence in the nation and termed it as the biggest hurdle in hosting the World Cup,

There are travel restrictions for some countries and so we will speak with the United Nations. There are some issues regarding security and infrastructure and we will talk in this regard with professor Yunus [chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government]. He is a sports lover and hope that he can resolve the matter,” Mahmud said.

At present, multiple countries including India, UK, Australia and New Zealand have advised their citizens against traveling to Bangladesh.

He added that matters became more difficult with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president remaining absconding. He said that the board have been advised to resolve the issue within the ICC’s legal framework and that the board was autonomous in nature and the government could not give a decision on it.

The ICC is also closely monitoring the situation unfolding in Bangladesh. While the BCB has maintained that it is touch with the ICC, it remains to be seen if Bangladesh can ensure security arrangements are in place for the Women’s T20 World Cup. ICC is also considering India, UAE and Sri Lanka as alternatives should Bangladesh fail to host the tournament.
