The International Cricket Council (ICC) is concerned with the unrest in Bangladesh that could derail the nation’s plans to host Women’s T20 World Cup in October. Bangladesh is currently turmoil with over 40 dead and 500 arrested over job quotas.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, but the event is still some time away. The situation appears to have improved over the last 24 hours,” Cricbuzz quoted an ICC source as saying.
ICC asks BCB on Dhaka unrest
The ICC top brass is currently meeting in Colombo. While the issue was not on the agenda of ICC’s annual congregation, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials were asked about the situation.
The 10-team Women’s T20 World Cup will be played over 18 days in Dhaka and Sylhet. The final will be on October 20. Dhaka is currently facing the unrest.
ICC is already facing the heat for mismanagement of Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA. The international cricket body has already launched an internal investigation regarding fund misappropriation.
16-team Women’s T20 World Cup soon
The ICC also announced its plans to expand Women’s T20 World Cup. While the tournament is currently locked at 10 teams, it will be expanded to 12 teams in 2026.
But by 2030, ICC plans to have a 16-team Women’s T20 World Cup.
