Just a week ago, the ICC held its annual meeting in Sri Lanka. Many topics were discussed from July 19-22, with the focus on spreading women’s cricket in particular. One thing that wasn’t on the agenda was the election of the next ICC Chairman. New Zealand’s Greg Barclay has held the position since 2020, and his 2-year term will end in November.
In an interview with the press, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan revealed that the next ICC board meeting will be held in Dhaka, and there is a good chance that the next election will take place during that meeting.
“It has been confirmed that the next ICC board meeting will be in Dhaka. Possibly, the election would take place here. I think there will be an election as the current chairman will have the last board meeting. We are expected to give our election mandate by this time,” Nazmul told reporters on July 28.

ICC Chairman, just the 1st step for Jay Shah
As earlier reported, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is currently in the race to become the next ICC Chairman. It was suggested that if Shah were to contest for the position, he’d be elected without opposition. At first, the BCCI Secretary wasn’t thrilled with the idea of changing his base from Mumbai to Dubai, but after seeing how shabbily run the 2024 T20 World Cup was, he might have changed his mind.
But it isn’t just the ICC Chairman position that Shah eyes. You see, to become the next BCCI President, one needs 9 years of experience as a member of a governing body. Right now, Shah’s just halfway there. He can’t continue as the BCCI Secretary further than 2025, and if he joins the ICC as their new Chairman, he can serve a 3-year term, and by early 2028, he’ll be eligible to become the BCCI President.
