Bangladesh Asia Cup Squad out, Shakib to lead, Mahedi returns after 2 years

The Bangladesh's first Asia Cup 2023 match is against Sri Lanka and is scheduled for August 31 in Pallekele.

Tanzid Tamim, an uncapped opener, is a part of Bangladesh’s 17-person roster for the Asia Cup 2023. Mahedi Hasan, who last played against New Zealand at Wellington in 2021, returned to the ODI team along with young hitter Shamim Patowary, who plays for Bangladesh in T20Is.

Tanzid enters the game after his performances in the Emerging Asia Cup, where he scored three half centuries and put himself in the running for the opening spot left open by Tamim Iqbal’s absence. Iqbal was rested from the competition in order to fully recover from his back injury so that he would be ready for the World Cup.

The Asia Cup team is led by Shakib Al Hasan, who was named the new ODI captain on Friday.

Mohammad Naim continues to be the opener for Bangladesh, despite Rony Talukdar’s failure to keep his position. Tanzid has been given that position.

Along with Shamim and Mehedy, Nasum Ahmed also rejoins the team. In order to decide who should be the second left-arm spinner in the ODI team, Bangladesh disputed between Nasum Ahmed and Taijul Islam.

The key issue that still needs to be resolved is whether Mahmudullah, an accomplished campaigner who was a member of the 32-person preliminary team for the Asia Cup, is out for good. Mahmudullah, 37, last competed in ODIs against England in March of this year.

Permutations and Combinations of BCB

Tamim Iqbal is currently receiving treatment for his back issue and has also given up the ODI captaincy. In an effort to get healthy in time for the ODI series against New Zealand starting on September 21, he saw a specialist in London last month.

The ODI team against Afghanistan included Rony Talukdar and Taijul Islam, although they weren’t included in the Asia Cup roster. Along with a successful Dhaka Premier League (DPL) performance last season, Tanzid scored three fifties in the recent ACC Emerging Nations Cup. Mahedi, on the other hand, had a mediocre DPL season but performed admirably in the ACC competition.

The Asia Cup match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is scheduled for August 31 in Pallekele.
