Back issues ruled Mayank Yadav out of BGT, speedster likely out for 3 months

Mayank had taken 4 wickets in 3 T20Is against Bangladesh earlier in the month and looked fit despite a slight dip in his pace.

Mayank Yadav has sustained a back injury that has ruled him out for the next three months. The express pacer had impressed everyone in IPL 2024, but just 73 balls in, he’d sustained two injuries that ruled him out. After rehab, he was handed his maiden Indian cap against Bangladesh earlier in the month. He didn’t breach the 150+ mark often but impressed everyone with his control.

Injury strikes once again

Subsequently, he was named as a travelling reserve for the India vs New Zealand Test series. However, an injury has ruled him out yet again. Mayank was thought of as an ‘x factor’ pick for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 due to his high pace. However, a back issue means he’ll miss the India vs South Africa T20Is and potential ‘A’ matches this month, along with the Ranji Trophy 2024-25.

“There appears to be some problem with his back. Could also be a case of stress fracture. As per the earlier prescription from the NCA, he could play in the Ranji Trophy from its fourth or fifth round, but that’s no longer possible now. He’s again out for quite some time,” a BCCI official told PTI.

Comeback almost confirmed

Mayank Yadav’s personal coach, Devendra Sharma, has revealed that the injury isn’t new and he’s been advised to target the India vs England ODI series (February 6-12). There is a 5-match T20I series against the Three Lions just before, but he’s not expected to participate in that. Considering that the ICC Champions Trophy will start a week later, BCCI might feel it’s apt to keep him fresh just in case.

“It’s not that Mayank has sustained a fresh injury, but he has been advised not to play now as they’re looking to have him back for the England ODIs,” Devendra was quoted by PTI.
