Pakistan skipper Babar Azam stated that his bond with Shaheen Afridi is not very recent. He also explained the bond he shares with Shaheen. After Shaheen was announced as skipper for a series, there were reports of rift between him and Babar.
Babar puts country first, and reiterates they support each other
Babar said that the aim is to keep the country first rather than focus on individual glory. “I want to make clear that Shaheen and my bond is not recent, it goes back a long way. We support each other in every situation. Our aim is to put Pakistan first, and how to put Pakistan’s name up in lights. We don’t think of individual glory, and thankfully, those elements are not present in the team,” he said during the press conference on the eve of the five match T20 series between Pakistan and New Zealand.
What caused the captaincy confusion?
Babar Azam was announced as the captain for the T2O series against New Zealand and the upcoming T20 World Cup. He had previously resigned from his captaincy duties, across all formats in November 2023, after which Shaheen was made the T20 skipper for one series. However, he was stripped off the captaincy.
It will be interesting to see the camaraderie between Babar and Shaheen, with the T20 World Cup just a few days away. However, Babar has confirmed that he shares a strong relationship with Shaheen.
