Pakistan’s T20I series against New Zealand starting Thursday (April 18) could see a surprise absence of two mega stars. Pakistan’s head coach Azhar Mahmood revealed the possibility of resting skipper Babar Azam and ex-captain Shaheen Afridi during the five-match series, citing workload management as part of their rotation strategy.
Speaking to reporters in Rawalpindi, Mahmood emphasized a cautious approach. “It is possible,” he said of Azam’s absence, “Babar Azam can rest but it will depend on the situation. We will view all aspects while making the decision.”
Meanwhile, speculation surrounding the fitness of star pacer Shaheen Afridi was dispelled by the coach. “Well Shaheen Afridi is completely fit,” Mahmood declared, shutting down rumors of Afridi missing the initial matches. “I have heard this news that he may skip the first two games against New Zealand. But this has come from the media and certainly not from us“

In a separate comment, Mahmood downplayed suggestions that New Zealand will be fielding a weakened squad against Pakistan. “The date suggests they (New Zealand) have a wealth of experience in domestic cricket,” he said. “They are their best talent and in T20, no team is weak. I listen about B team and other stuff but this is the New Zealand team and they will play against Pakistan.”
