Axar Patel’s stunning save to Ashutosh-Mukesh collision, Delhi Capitals’ contrasting field day in DC vs MI

Axar Patel led from the front with efforts in the field, but a dangerous Ashutosh Sharma- Mukesh Kumar collison took shine off Capitals' bowling effort.

Delhi Capitals had an up-and-down day on the field as Axar Patel’s side faced the Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. Having put the visitors to bat, the hosts put their best foot forward with the ball in hand. Axar Patel led from the front with efforts in the field, but a dangerous Ashutosh Sharma-Mukesh Kumar collision took the shine off the Capitals’ bowling effort in DC vs MI clash.

Axar saves 5 in acrobatic boundary effort

Axar Patel is one of the best fielders around in Indian cricket, and the Delhi Capitals skipper once again set an example with his stunning fielding effort at the Kotla. While boundary saves are the norm in modern-day cricket, Patel’s awareness to pull the ball back in play and save five runs for his team deserves plaudits.

In the 18th over of the innings, Naman Dhir smashed Mitchell Starc straight down the ground in an attempt to clear the boundary. Axar, who was on the boundary, timed his jump to perfection to grab the ball, but let it go as he was off-balance. While tripping, the DC skipper managed to throw the ball back in, only for Dhir to grab a single. Should it have been taken, Patel’s effort would have been one of the efforts of the season. While it wasn’t to be, he still saved five runs for his side.

Ashutosh-Mukesh crash, Sharma taken off field

Axar will hope his efforts would rub off on his teammates, but it wasn’t to be for the Delhi Capitals skipper. Later, in the very next over, a miscommunication between Mukesh Kumar and Ashutosh Sharma saw them collide to offer Tilak Varma a reprieve. The MI batter picked up three runs, while both players needed to be treated by the physio as a result of the collision. Ashutosh was later taken off the field, while Mukesh made amends, eventually dismissing Tilak Varma in the final over.

Delhi Capitals are the only team unbeaten in IPL 2025 so far, winning all 4 of their games so far. The clash against MI is their first game at their home ground in Delhi.
