Washington Sundar will go to Colombo to represent India in the Asia Cup final versus Sri Lanka on Sunday. He will replace Axar Patel who sustained injuries in the Super 4 match against Bangladesh on Friday. Washington Sundar, 23, has been called in to replace Axar Patel, who was forced to leave the Super Four match against Bangladesh due to niggles and may not make the final. Sundar is now in Bengaluru as a member of India’s Asian Games team.
After the final, Washington Sundar is anticipated to rejoin the Asian Games 2023 team. Before the games begin in Hangzhou, China, on September 23, the training goes through that date. “Axar Patel has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka due to a left quadriceps strain sustained during India’s Super Four match against Bangladesh on Friday. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Washington Sundar as a replacement. The all-rounder arrived in Colombo this evening (Saturday) and has joined the squad,” BCCI said in a statement on September 16.
Washington Sundar in Asia Cup Final?
With three fours and two sixes, Axar Patel was able to score 42 runs off of 34 deliveries. Additionally, he contributed to two significant partnerships that kept India’s chances of winning the match alive.
The first one was with Shubman Gill (39 runs for the seventh wicket), and the second was with Shardul Thakur (40 runs for the eighth wicket). Nevertheless, after he was removed in the penultimate over, those aspirations began to fade.
Washington Sundar, a left-handed batter and offbreaker who last competed in an ODI at home against New Zealand in January of this year, was not included in the preliminary 15-man World Cup roster.
If selected for the final, Sundar might be useful with his offspin against Sri Lanka’s left-handers on what has thus far been a helpful Colombo track.
