Axar Patel’s all-round skills give India selection headache: A blessing in disguise?

The flip side of Axar's success is Kuldeep Yadav warming the bench.

Axar Patel’s performance against Pakistan has thrown an interesting light on India’s spin bowling options. While his contribution with both bat and ball solidified his place in the playing XI, it has also pushed a question to the forefront: does Kuldeep Yadav get a chance in this T20 World Cup?

Axar Patel: The Unexpected Hero

Axar Patel, an all-rounder similar to Ravindra Jadeja, wasn’t a guaranteed starter. Traditionally, India opted for one left-arm spinner alongside an off-spinner for better match-up flexibility.

This time, however, they’ve gone in with both Axar and Jadeja, showcasing the former’s growing importance.

Axar Patel: All-round brilliance

Axar Patel’s knock against Pakistan perfectly exemplified his value. Promoted to No. 4, he played a crucial 20-run knock, shielding the likes of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya from the new ball. This batting depth he provides is a key advantage, especially considering India hasn’t faced many left-handed batsmen so far.

Kuldeep Yadav sits out: Matter of balance

The flip side of Axar’s success is Kuldeep Yadav warming the bench. The pitches haven’t been conducive to spin, favoring swing and seam bowling. Additionally, the lack of left-handed batsmen has minimized the need for a specialist wrist-spinner like Kuldeep.

Bowling coach on India Team Selection

India’s bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, acknowledged the situation. He highlighted that while Kuldeep understands the team’s balance needs, Axar’s batting prowess adds another dimension, evident in the last game.

Mhambrey also hinted that Kuldeep’s chance might come later in the tournament depending on the pitch and opposition.

Axar vs Jadeja: Selection conundrum?

Mhambrey downplayed concerns about Ravindra Jadeja’s batting form, emphasizing that it’s a team game and someone like Jadeja, with his experience, can turn things around quickly. However, Axar Patel’s batting against Pakistan puts more pressure on Jadeja to deliver.

The question remains: if India needs three seamers in a future match, who do they pick – the versatile Axar or the experienced Jadeja? Axar’s batting prowess makes this a difficult call, a problem India might be happy to have considering their bowling depth.
