Australian Open 2023: Australia is experiencing extreme heat waves at the moment. With temperatures touching as high as 41°C, it remains a concern. The country is set to host major sporting events in the upcoming weeks. Currently the scorching heat has made life difficult for Australian cricketers. In the ongoing Boxing Day Test match, Opener David Warner and all-rounder Cameron Green suffered heat exhaustion and cramps. They had to retire midway during their innings on Tuesday. According to Australian weather reports, Christmas has marked the beginning of heatwave in the country. It is expected to intensify between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. This has resulted in the increase in the risk of grassfires and heat-related illness during the Christmas break.

Temperatures soared as high as 40 degrees in Melbourne on Tuesday. Several other cities like Adelaide and Sydney too are experiencing intense heat. Players had a tough time at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the second day of the second Test between Australia and South Africa.

Australian Opener David Warner slammed a historic double ton. But the batsman huffed and puffed his way to reach the landmark. He struggled with severe heat exhaustion. The southpaw had to be attended quite often by the medical team as he suffered with cramps. He however managed to slam 200, becoming only the second batsman in Test history to hit double ton in one’s 100th Test match.

After reaching the landmark, he was escorted from the team as he was no longer able to bat. Cameron Green too joined David Warner in retiring hurt soon.

The heat wave is further expected to intensify in the coming days. This becomes a concern as several top Tennis players are set to arrive in the country. Renowned stars including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will be in Australia ahead of the Australian Open.

They will be featuring in several warm-up events that are lined-up ahead of the tournament. On Thursday, December 29, the inaugural edition of the United Cup is set to begin. Meanwhile Adelaide International is scheduled to be played between 2nd and 8th January 2023. It is an ATP 250 and WTA 500 event

While players like Rafael Nadal, World No.1 Iga Swiatek and Nick Krgios will be in action in the United Cup, Djokovic headlines the action at the Adelaide International.
