Australia opener David Warner put up yet another solid show with the bat, in the first T20I vs West Indies on Friday, as he smashed 70 from 36 balls, to take his side to an 11-run win. After the match, the southpaw, who retired from Tests and ODIs recently, also revealed his retirement plans from the T20Is.
After bagging the Player of the Match award, Warner said, “Pleasing to get the win on the board. Was a nice wicket to bat on and you have to make the most of it. Feel great and refreshed, I’m pumped. I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there and it’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next six months. Pretty much the same squad going to New Zealand so it’s important we win there as well.”
Meanwhile, Warner has seen success in all the formats and has been part of some of the most prestigious trophy-winning moments with the Aussie team. He won the T20 World Cup in 2021, followed by the WTC Test Championship in 2023, and then the ICC World Cup in 2023 in India. He had also led Sunrisers Hyderabad to an IPL title a few years back.
The 37-year-old will now be looking to end his international career with yet another ICC trophy, with the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place this year, in a few month’s time. As far as the Australian team is concerned, they will travel to Adelaide now for the second T20I, with a series win in mind.
