Why Irealand can pose problems for Australia?
- On paper of course this should be a routine win for Australia – the tournament hosts and defending ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions.
- Ireland have already taken two giant scalps in this competition with their wins over England and West Indies.
“They’ve got some seriously talented players,” Australia captain Aaron Finch said, wary of taking the Irish lightly.
“They’ve got a lot of experience, especially at the top of the order, as well, so they’re never a team that you can take lightly. If the wicket has got anything in it, they’ve got very good bowlers to maximise that, as well.”

ICC T20 World CUP 2022: The famous win over England at the MCG was arguably Ireland’s greatest ever T20I win in men’s competition, and has given Andrew Balbirnie’s side a chance of springing a surprise in Group 1. But that chance will disappear if the Irish can’t get another win on the board against a dangerous Australian outfit.
While in their last game, Melbourne’s fickle weather won out as Ireland’s clash with Afghanistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Both Afghanistan and Ireland received one-point apiece to stay in contention for a semi-final berth.

The crushing nature of Australia’s loss to New Zealand in the opening match of the group had put them in a perilous position, not only because of the result but also because of its impact on NRR. The tournament hosts know that they cannot afford to lose another game – two defeats isn’t mathematically terminal to a team’s qualification chances, but it will likely take a lot of fortune to qualify with just three wins in the Super 12 stage.
However, the chances of a successful title defence have increased – firstly courtesy of the win over Sri Lanka in Perth on Tuesday. And England’s loss to Ireland, plus the washout between the Aussies and English in Melbourne, means run rate looks increasingly likely to be a factor. That’s why the hosts will be in search of a big win against giant-slayers Ireland to qualify for the semis.

AUS vs IRE Pitch Report
Despite the fact that seamers may get more pace out of Brisbane’s batting surface, it is still a reasonably excellent surface. Given that square boundaries are relatively lengthy, it is easy to hit straight down the ground. The wicket doesn’t change much, therefore it’s better to bowl first.
The surface at Brisbane’s Gabba is one of the fastest in the world, and pacers are certain to benefit from the extra bounce. That tempo will be enjoyable for the batters, and playing on this field will benefit them.
