Heavy rain and thunderstorm are likely to affect the entirety of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Brisbane has witnessed incessant rains over the past few days and both teams have suffered in their training in the build-up to the game. Both England and Australia have limited have had limited opportunities to practice on the field in the build-up to Wednesday’s first day of the series.
Rainfall records have tumbled in Queensland, and the same is expected over the next few days seriously affecting the Gabba Test. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected on almost all days, with a washout likely to be expected on some days. Scattered thunderstorms are forecast for the first three days of the Test, with conditions to improve on Saturday before another patchy outlook for Sunday.

Gabba curator David Sandurski prepared the pitch over the weekend after a break in rainfall and hopes to hand over a good wicket for the series opener. He however suggested the overcast conditions will end up deciding the outcome of the game and will have a larger impact than the pitch itself. He added, “A little bit of rain can freshen it up. It all adds spice to the game. I suppose that’s the beauty of playing on turf wickets, that’s what makes the game so exciting.
