India bagged five medals in the Asian Games on Sunday, 24th September. The nation also had some good results in the non-medal events on the day. Indian Women’s Cricket team advanced to the final. The Smriti Mandhana-led side defeated Bangladesh in the semifinal. Men’s Hockey team began their campaign with a dominant 16-0 win in Hockey. Men’s Football team entered the Round of 16 after a 1-0 win against Myanmar.
The Women’s Football team meanwhile bowed out of the tournament. They suffered a 0-1 loss to Thailand. In Swimming, Srihari Natraj finished sixth in the 100m backstroke final. Men’s volleyball journey came to an end after they were defeated by Japan in the quarter-finals.

Cricket
India vs Bangladesh
The India Women Cricket Team secured a place in the final of the Asian Games with a thumping 8-wicket victory against Bangladesh to seal their place in the final of Asian Games on Sunday. Pooja Vastrakar was the difference maker as she bagged four wickets for 17 runs to help India bowl out Bangladesh for just 51. Jemimah Rodrigues (20) and Shafali Varma (17) then powered India to a comfortable chase.
Fencing
India narrowly missed out on a medal in Asian Games fencing when Taniksha Khatri lost to world No 2 Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong 7-15 in individual epee quarterfinal here on Sunday. The Indian had seven touches but her opponent was superior and sealed the issue to make the semifinals. A quarterfinal win would have guaranteed at least a bronze medal for the Indian.
Two more Indians — Bibish Kathiresan and Dev — were in the fray on Sunday. Kathiresan lost to South Korea’s Kwanghyun Lee 5-15 in the last-32, while Dev was knocked out by Chinese Taipei’s Yi-Tung Chen 8–15.
Table Tennis
The Indian Men’s table tennis team bowed out of the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou. The team suffered a loss to South Korea in the quarterfinal on Sunday.
India were completely outplayed by the Koreans as they sealed a comfortable 3-0 win. Following the loss, India’s campaign in the team events of the sport has come to an end.
Earlier in the day, the Indian team defeated Kazakhstan in a closely contested match. Veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal played a crucial role in helping the team secure a victory. The match was tied 2-2 when Sharath Kamal produced a face-saving win in the decisive fifth rubber.
In the women’s team event, India faced a tough challenge from Thailand. Manika Batra struggled in both her singles matches, leading to a 2-3 loss. However, Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee managed to secure wins to keep India in contention. Unfortunately, Ayhika failed to consolidate the lead after leading 2-1 against Orawan, who changed her strategy in the last two games to secure a 10-12, 11-4, 5-11, 11-4, 11-3 win.
Swimming
Sirhari Natraj touched the pad at 54.71s to finish second in his heat and fifth overall to progress to the final. The other Indian swimmer in the fray, Utakarsh Santosh Patil finished with a time of 59.42s to sign off at the 20th spot in the men’s 100m backstroke event.
In the Men’s 100m Freestyle, Tanish George Matthew and Anil Kumar Shylaja failed to progress to the men’s 100m freestyle final, finishing 12th and 17th respectively. The Indian women’s 4×100 m freestyle relay team consisting of Dhinidhi Desinghu, Maana Patel, Janhvi Choudhary, Shivangi Sarma secured seventh place finish in the final.

Hockey
The Indian men’s hockey team could not have asked for a better start at the Asian Games, as they beat Uzbekistan 16-0. In the absence of skipper Harmanpreet Singh, India was in total command against the world no. 44 team and did not give them an inch. For the record, India is the highest-ranked team in the competition — WR-3.
For India, Lalit Upadhyay (7’, 24’ 37’, 53’), Varun Kumar (12’, 36’, 50’, 51’), Abhishek (17’), Mandeep Singh (18’, 27’, 28’) Amit Rohidas (38’), Sukhjeet (42’), Shamsher Singh (43’) and Sanjay (57’) scored in the commanding win.
Tennis
Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal started his Asian Games men’s singles campaign in style as he defeated Macao China’s Ho Tin Marco 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets.
In men’s doubles duo Saketh Myneni and Ramanathan Ramkumar progressed to pre-quarter-finals at the Asian Games after registering a dominating straight-set win over Nepal’s Bastola Abhishek and Khadka Pradip on Sunday. Saketh-Ramanathan defeated Nepal by 6-2, 6-3 in just 57 minutes.
Boxing
India had a great day in boxing. Preeti advanced to the quarterfinals after winning in the Round of 16 of the Women’s 50-54kg boxing while Reigning World Champion Nikhat Zareen entered into the Round of 16 with a 5-0 win over World Championship 2023 Silver medallist Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the women’s 50kg category. Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj missed a chance to win a medal in the men’s 100-metre backstroke at the 19th Asian Games. He finished sixth in the final.
Volleyball
India had a disappointing result in volleyball, as men’s volleyball journey came to an end after they were defeated by Japan in the quarter-finals on Sunday at the Asian Games in China’s Hangzhou.
Chess
In the Men’s Chess, Vidit Gujarathi won against Bangladesh’s Mohammad Rahman. Arjun Erigaisi meanwhile won against Paulo Bersamina. In the women’s chess round, Humpy won against Iran’s Alinasabalamdari Mobina. Meanwhile, Harika defeated United Arab Emirates’ Alali Rouda
Indian men’s chess player Vidit Gujarathi faced defeat, Arjun Kumar Ereigais played out a tie while women’s chess players Harika Dronavalli and Koneru Humpy won their games in the second round of men’s and women’s individual competition.

Football
The Indian women’s football team bowed out of the ongoing Asian Games following a 0-1 loss to Thailand in their Group B match on Sunday. Parichat Thongrong (52′) scored the solitary, but the winning goal for Thailand.
The Indian men’s football team has stormed into the Round of 16 with a 1-1 draw against Myanmar at the Asian Games on Sunday. India finished second in Group A with one win, one loss and one draw. India have four points from three games.
The Indian rugby sevens team had a disappointing start to their campaign as heavy losses to Hong Kong and Japan put the women’s side put them out of medal contention at the ongoing Asian Games.
In Wushu, Mayanglambam Suraj Singh and Anjul Namedo finished fifth and sixth respectively in the Men’s Changquan final.
