Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma will take part in the squad selection meeting for the Asia Cup 2023. The Ajit Agarkar led panel were set to convene for the same on August 21. Now, it has been shifted further by a day, to take stock of action in the IND vs IRE series.
Initially, the selection meeting was set for August 20. However, a change was made as it clashed with IND vs IRE 2nd T20. With the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson in action, taking stock of action seemed more appropriate.
The talking point however remains the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. The injured duo have begun match simulations at the NCA and could make a return to the Asia Cup. Given India’s middle order crisis, Rohit would hope to have his two best players available.
“KL Rahul is fit and available for selection. He has been regularly batting and wicketkeeping and looks good fitness-wise. With regards to Shreyas Iyer, signs are extremely positive,” a source close to developments told CricketNext.
Since the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test match against Australia in March, Shreyas Iyer has not participated in any competitive cricket matches.
Later, he underwent back surgery in London, which rendered him unable to play in the IPL for the full season. Shreyas Iyer was scheduled to make a comeback for the Ireland T20Is, but the NCA staff decided he required a longer window for recuperation.
