The controversy over the Asia Cup hosting rights continues. The Pakistan Cricket Board still bags the rights to host the tournament, but the BCCI has made it clear that they won’t send its team to Pakistan. As per the latest media reports, the matter has been postponed till March.
According to a report in one of the leading sports websites, all the ACC members are required to ask their respective governments for clearance to play in Pakistan. However, the PCB, in a strongly worded statement to the BCCI, indicated that “no such matters” were raised in the meeting.
The PCB also added that no member has indicated any intention to seek any sort of government clearance to play in Pakistan.
When it comes to the Asian members, Sri Lanka visited Pakistan in 2017 and 2019, while Bangladesh toured Pakistan in 2020. Also in the FTP 2023–2027, ICC members Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh have confirmed their tours to Pakistan.
India has shown reluctance to tour Pakistan because of the political tensions between the two Asian neighbors. Reports are doing the rounds that the 2023 Asia Cup might be moved out of Pakistan and played in the UAE. PCB President Najam Sethi has made it clear that the country will not forego the hosting rights for the Asia Cup or the Champions Trophy in 2025.
