Asia Cup 2022: JKCA Senior Multi-Day Cup: Umran Malik’s maiden Indian voyage has been cut short. After just three T20Is and three series with Team India, he was dropped for the West Indies tour. The reason? He has been underwhelming and could not replicate his IPL 2022 performance. But the young speedster is taking the break as an opportunity to bid for a comeback to India’s Asia Cup 2022 squad. He will be playing in Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association’s Multi-Day Cup. Abdul Samad will also feature in the red-ball tournament. Follow Asia Cup 2022 Live Updates with InsideSport.IN.
After warming the bench in the South Africa series, Umran Malik made his India debut against Ireland. However, he had a day to forget. He conceded 14 runs in his first over and captain Hardik Pandya never called him back. In the next match, he bagged his maiden wicket but conceded 42 runs in his four overs. He was promptly dropped for the 3rd T20.

His next assignment was against Derbyshire where he performed well, scalping two wickets for 31 runs. While he did not get an opportunity in the first two T20s against England, he was selected for the 3rd T20. But he ended up being the most expensive bowler, conceding 56 runs in 4 overs.

While he got captain Rohit Sharma’s backing, it did not seem to be true. He was dropped for the entire West Indies tour even though Jasprit Bumrah was rested.
“He is very much in our plans, it is just trying to give him that understanding as to what the team requires from him as well. Yes, there will be times where we want to try out a few guys and Umran is definitely one of those guys, keeping one eye on the World Cup, we want to see what he has to offer for us,” Rohit Sharma said ahead of T20 series against England.
With no domestic cricket and a county contract, Umran Malik now has turned his eyes to state cricket. The squad for the Asia Cup will be announced after the West Indies tour and good performances could propel him back to Team India. However, a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad seems to be far-fetched. His relative inexperience and lack of variation have made him an easy target of quality batters in international matches.

Umran will be playing for Team A3 in the JKCA Senior Multi-Day Cup. The team will be led by Henan Malik. Their first match will be against Team A4, led by Subham Pundir.
Umran is the only second player from Jammu & Kashmir to play for India after Parvez Rasool. He was also named the Emerging Player of IPL 2022 after bagging 22 wickets in 14 matches. He was an instant hit, clocking 157KMPH in IPL 2022. But he could never manage to cross 150KPH in more seam-friendly places like Ireland and England.
