Ashwin reveals how Virat Kohli’s wrong strategy for Akash Deep failed disastrously in Gabba Test

Ashwin shed light on an incident from IND vs AUS 3rd Test at the Gabba involving Virat Kohli and Akash Deep

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin shed light on an incident during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy involving Virat Kohli and Akash Deep. The Tamil Nadu spinner shared details on an instance when the former Indian skipper’s strategy for the pacer backfired in Down Under. Ashwin took the world by surprise by announcing his retirement midway through the IND vs AUS Test series after the game in Brisbane.

When Kohli’s plan costed Akash Deep his rhythm

Speaking at the AWS AI Conclave 2025, Ashwin recalled that during the IND vs AUS 3rd Test at the Gabba, Kohli ran up to Akash to suggest him to bowl straight. The veteran spinner pointed out that the pacer was in good rhythm before he was approached by Virat. He revealed tat following this advice, Akash’s rhythm went awry. Ashwin suggested that it was important not to disturb a bowler and instead allow him to build on a good spell.

In the recently concluded Test series. Akash Deep was bowling a fabulous spell at The Gabba. He was probably bowling the best at The Gabba, Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah) wasn’t. He was going through a wonderful spell of 3-4 overs. I was watching the game from outside. No offence. I saw Virat (Kohli) run up to him and said ‘Seedha daalo yaar (bowl straight buddy)’ and immeditely out came a fielder and he went to leg gully. Akash Deep bowled on the body and a couple of balls down the leg side, got flicked, got pulled, and his rhythm went awry,” said Ashwin

Ashwin explained why Virat chose to offer that particular advice to Akash Deep, explaining that the former Indian skipper thought so in his head that what would be uncomfortable for him to face could also be the same for Smith. However, he pointed out that bowling was different and that in order to hit the right length, a start was needed.

If you understand a bowler, you know he is going through a right spell. Do not disturb him, allow him to build on his spell,” he added
