Former India pacer Ashish Nehra is not keen to become coach of India Cricket Team. As per reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approached the Gujarat Titans coach for the role of India’s T20 coach as Rahul Dravid’s term as the head coach for all formats of the Indian cricket team concluded after the ICC World Cup 2023, where India faced a defeat in the final.
However, as per a report from the Indian Express, Ashish Nehra has declined the offer.
In pursuit of breaking India’s decade-long ICC title drought and with an eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, the BCCI reached out to Ashish Nehra. This interest could be attributed to Nehra’s achievements during his coaching stint with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. In the 2022 season, under his guidance, the team clinched the title, and in the 2023 edition, they secured the second-place finish.

Dravid stays on after Ashish Nehra’s reluctance
Nevertheless, following Ashish Nehra’s rejection of the T20I head coach position, the BCCI is now keen on retaining Rahul Dravid as the head coach across all three formats.
India captain Rohit Sharma and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar are both in agreement that Rahul Dravid should extend his coaching tenure at least until the upcoming T20 World Cup next year. And with inputs from both captain and the chief selectors, BCCI has convinced Dravid to continue. However, it’s unclear how long Dravid will stay on. With Dravid, the coaching staff will also continue. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour will continue along with fielding coach T Dilip.
However, the door for Ashish Nehra may not be close yet. Nehra’s contract with Gujarat Titans will get over with IPL 2024. And if Dravid does decide to step down after T20 World Cup 2024, India will have to look for another coach with ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and WTC Final. Hence, Nehra could still be on BCCI’s mind.
