Usman Khawaja joined an elite list on Saturday as he became one of the few cricketers to score twin hundreds in an Ashes test match. Khawaja, making his comeback in the absence of COVID-19 hit Travis Head, blasted his way to centuries in each innings to cause a selection conundrum for Justin Langer and his coaching staff.

Khawaja became the ninth cricketer to score twin hundreds in an Ashes Test, joining fellow teammate Steve Smtih, who was the last to do so almost three years ago. He is the sixth Australian to achieve the record, with Matthew Hayden, Steve Waugh being amongst those to achieve the record.

The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is one of Khawaja’s favourite hunting grounds, with the left-hander scoring three hundreds against England at the venue. He also became the first to score a twin hundred at the SCG in an Ashes Test. Previously Dough Walters and Ricky Ponting have scored hundreds in each innings of a match at Syndey.

Among Indians, former captains Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid have achieved the feat multiple times. Vijay Hazare was the first to do so in 1948, while Rohit Sharma was the latest when scoring twin tons against South Africa in 2019. Hazare’s record came in Adelaide, so did Virat Kohli’s, when he scored 115 and 141 in 2014.
