Steve Smith on Saturday became the sixth player to score 3000 runs in Ashes history, following his brief cameo on Day 4 of the AUS vs ENG 4th Test. Smith is the fourth Australian to do so after Sir Don Bradman, Alan Border and Steve Waugh, and his average of 62 is only second best to Bradman.

Smith also became the fifth player to score 3000 runs against England, with the list seeing the addition of West Indian legend Garry Sobers. The Australian lynchpin went past Brian Laran, who managed 2983 runs against England in his career.

Steve Smith scored a fighting 67 in the 1st innings, building an important partnership with Usman Khawaja, who later went on to make a fine century to take Australia to 416. The Australian vice-captain in the process leapfrogged current head coach Justin Langer in the list of leading run-getters for the team, climbing up to seventh in the overall list. Smith’s overall average of 60 is better than any player in the top 10.
