Ashes 2021 LIVE: Nasser Hussain explains how Joe Root & Co can make a stirring comeback in Adelaide

Ashes 2021 LIVE: Nasser Hussain picks James Anderson over Stuart Broad in England Playing XI- check why?

“England have to adopt an attitude of ‘we’ll show them’. They have to believe they can turn this Ashes series around,” Nasser Hussain wrote in his column for DailyMail.

“The issue is England’s batting. Joe Root is the only batter averaging over 40 this year — most are not averaging 30 — and other than the captain’s six centuries the only other batter to reach three figures in 2021 is Rory Burns. They have to get big runs in their first innings, it’s as simple as that. If England can do that in the second Test they will be ahead of the game rather than playing catch-up,” he added.

Hussain also suggested Joe Root & Co not to press to panic button if they feel they need a spinner.

“England think they need a spinner they should pick Leach or Dom Bess rather than panic and react to what happened at the Gabba. But England have to be much, much better at Adelaide,” he concluded.

Ashes 2021 LIVE: Chris Silverwood- England head coach Chris Silverwood has also insisted that his side still have the belief after losing the opening Test by 9 wickets that extended their losing streak to ten matches in Australia.

‘There is belief they can win this series. We have been in this position before. We have gone 1-0 down and then bounced back. We have the players here that can match the Australians,’ he said.

  • England had last registered a victory against Australia at Adelaide in December 2010. Since then, they have lost two straight matches in successive tours. As a result, Joe Root & Co will be adamant to change history.
  • The visitors will have to play well with the bat after missing out on scoring big in both the innings (147 & 297) of the opening Test.
  • The absence of Josh Hazlewood and David Warner still doubtful for the upcoming Test could be the best opportunity for Joe Root & Co to fightback against the Aussies.
  • The return of James Anderson and Stuart Broad are likely to strengthen the squad.
  • Spin Factor- England will have to refrain from using spin as recent history has not gone in their favour.

Last time England had played Moeen Ali as a spinner in Adelaide Test and he failed to take even a single wicket in both the innings of the Test match. England had lost the match by 120 runs in 2017. Earlier in 2013, Monty Panesar could take just a couple of wickets as Australia beat England by 218 runs.
