Ashes 2021 LIVE: England’s Saqib Mahmood- Amid England’s derailed bowling attack in Australia, Saqib Mahmood has made a massive statement for Ashes call-up with a record-breaking BBL debut on Sunday. The pacer took 4-9 in the first couple of overs to leave Brisbane Heat reeling with another run out of his own bowling, the hosts were reduced to 5/15 in the only third over. He ended with 4/22, denied an opportunity to complete fifer by the narrowest of margins as Sydney Thunder registered 53 runs victory. Follow Ashes 2021 live updates on InsideSport.IN

Ashes 2021 LIVE: England’s Saqib Mahmood makes strong case for Ashes call-up with record-breaking BBL debut

Ian Chappell says Joe Root’s captaincy ‘opposite definition of excellent leadership’

  • Saqib Mahmood’s figures of 4-9 after two overs were the best-ever for Sydney Thunder in the first couple of overs. The seamer removed dangerous Chris Lynn, Ben Duckett, Sam Heazlett and skipper Jimmy Pierson in the first three overs.
  • He became the first BBL player to take four wickets inside the first three overs of an innings, only the 10th player to achieve the feat in T20s.
  • His Man of the Match performance adds to his case as Ashes call-up. He has previously played 7 ODIs and 9 T20Is for England and he was part of the Test touring squad earlier this year.
  • England have twice leaked 400+ runs in the first innings.
  • Saqib has played 25 FC and 34 List A matches and scalped 70 and 64 wickets respectively.

“Obviously when you come to a new side you want to get off to good start,” Saqib Mahmood said as quoted by Fox Sports.

“To get a wicket early doors, then those first two or three overs, it all seemed to come together for me,” he added.

Mahmood’s top-class performance comes amid under fire bowling performance in ongoing Ashes. The likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson failed to bowl out Australia on the last 3 valid occasions.
