Are Pakistan close to achieving T20 World Cup glory? Shaheen Afridi’s ‘Lahore Qalandars’ analogy makes one wonder

Shaheen was recently relieved of captaincy with Babar Azam taking over the reigns of the Pakistan ahead of T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi expressed optimism about Pakistan being very close to lifting the T20 World Cup trophy. The Pakistan team had put in impressive performances in the previous two editions of the tournament. The reached the semi-final in 2021 and the final in 2022 but failed to get their hands on the trophy. Shaheen felt that with a plan in place, success will follow sooner or later.

Afridi convinced of Pakistan’s success

Afridi gave the example of his Pakistan Super League (PSL) team, Lahore Qalandars, who were the only team to win the title back-to-back despite finishing last in their initial seasons.

It’s not possible that you put in the hard yards, and you don’t get the results. Like Lahore Qalandars put in the hard work for six years [in PSL]. They did the player development program as well and despite finishing at the bottom in the early years, they won back-to-back tournaments recently,” Shaheen said in a podcast with PCB.

And the Pakistan team is in a similar process, we’re very close to achieving [T20] World Cup glory,” he added.

Shaheen Afridi’s tryst with destiny

Shaheen played a major role to play in both the 2021 and 2022 editions. He was hammered left and right by Matthew Wade in the 19th over of the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final, which ultimately saw Australia win.

He could not finish his spell against England in the 2022 final after suffering a knee injury while fielding. Pakistan was bowler short in his absence, and England overcame a middle-over stutter to win their second title.
