After missing the 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) advised Jofra Archer to skip the upcoming IPL 2024 season. The pacer has been in and out of action for the last couple of years due to an elbow injury. Archer made a comeback earlier this year against South Africa and decided to play for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023. However, that decision proved costly for the
pacer and the ECB.
The right arm quick suffered an elbow stress fracture during his short match stint and has been out of action since. The pacer was expected to make a recovery for the ODI World Cup and travelled out to India as a reserve in England’s squad. But no improvement in his fitness saw him travel back home after spending a week in India.
”… the ECB believes that it will be easier to manage Archer’s comeback if he is in the UK in April and May under its supervision than if he is in India on the books of an IPL team looking to get their money’s worth from him,” ESPNCricinfo reported.
As per the report, he has signed a new two-year contract with the ECB and ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States from June 4 next year, the board has ”opted to take as much control over Archer as possible.”
No IPL 2024 for Jofra Archer?
As per the report, Jofra has signed a new two-year contract with the ECB. The contract states that the board has control over when and where the express pacer plays during the time period.
ECB’s managing director, Rob Key, said last month, ‘‘We take that bet with him that we want him back fit and able to play for England because of the upside.
”You start looking at things like the Ashes in two years, the T20 World Cup (2024)… Jofra adds so much to that,” the former opener concluded.
