Another masterstroke by Jay Shah as ACC announces Women’s Under-19 T20 Asia Cup

The Under 19 Women's Asia Cup will act as a major preparatory tournament for the much-anticipated ICC Women's U-19 World Cup at the start of 2025.

In a move that further solidifies commitment to women’s cricket, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has announced the launch of the Women’s Under-19 T20 Asia Cup. This biennial tournament aims to provide a competitive platform for young talent across the continent, helping them prepare for the global stage of the Under-19 T20 World Cup.

Jay Shah heads ACC meeting

It is another cause that speaks volumes about Jay Shah’s strive to promote women’s cricket. After all, he is the current president of ACC. However, with him getting the ICC Chairmanship on December 1, Shah will have to leave the ACC presidentship. The announcement, made during the ACC’s executive board meeting in Kuala Lumpur, comes on the heels of the successful staging of the inaugural Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup last year.

Women’s U-19 likely to be played in Dec

The ACC plans to conduct the inaugural edition of the Women’s Under-19 T20 Asia Cup in mid-December 2024, leading into the Under-19 T20 World Cup scheduled for Malaysia in January-February 2025. While the exact venue and number of participating teams are yet to be determined, the tournament promises to be a thrilling addition to Asian cricket.

ACC President Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm for the launch, stating, “Today marks a pivotal moment for cricket in Asia. The introduction of the Women’s U-19 Asia Cup is a monumental achievement, providing a much-needed platform for young women cricketers to develop their skills and showcase their talent. This initiative strengthens the future of women’s cricket in Asia, and we are proud of the lasting impact these decisions will have, not only within our member nations but across the global cricketing community.”
