Michael Bracewell, a New Zealand all-rounder, ruptured his achilles during the current T20 Blast in England and will now be out for six to eight months. On Thursday, June 15, Bracewell will have surgery in the UK, starting a protracted recovery process that will keep the New Zealander who won the ODI player of the year award from competing in the forthcoming ODI World Cup 2023 in India.
The Black Caps are now dealing with two injuries. As talismanic batter Kane Williamson will also likely miss the ODI World Cup 2023 because of injury sustained in IPL.
“Firstly, you always feel for the player when injury strikes and especially when it means they will have to miss a world event,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

Bracewell made his ODI debut on March 2022 and has since played in 19 ODIs with 510 runs at an average of 42.50, primarily at Nos. 6 and 7. In January of this year, he had one of his most memorable performances against India in Hyderabad, when he slammed a 140 off 78 balls, including 12 fours and 10 sixes, to chase down the home team’s 349/8 total.
Bracewell’s outstanding effort helped New Zealand run India close even if they were unable to win. His other ODI century, 127* off 82, came last year in a nail-biting one-wicket victory against Ireland in Dublin. Bracewell has taken 15 wickets in the format while bowling.
“Michael’s a great team man and has had a fantastic 15 months for the BLACKCAPS since his international debut. We’ve seen his exceptional skills in all three facets of the game and he was shaping as an important player for us at the world cup in India,” NZ head coach said.
“Michael’s naturally pretty disappointed, but also pragmatic in acknowledging that injuries are a part of sport and he’s now turning his focus to his rehabilitation,” Stead added.
After surgery, Bracewell, who has been out of the country since April after getting called up to the IPL, won’t be able to fly back for a few weeks.
From July 26–28 and August 9–11, the BLACKCAPS will host parallel winter training camps in Lincoln and Tauranga.
