Another blow to CSK! Pacer Matheesha Pathirana injury confirmed by SL ahead of IPL 2024

CSK fans will be hoping for Pathirana's swift recovery as they begin their IPL title defense against RCB.

Just weeks before the start of the IPL 2024 season, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have received a blow with the confirmation of a hamstring injury to Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana.

CSK in Pre-Season Training, Matheesha Pathirana Missing

With the IPL 2024 season fast approaching, CSK have begun their pre-season training camp. While some Indian players have joined skipper MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad, international players like Pathirana are yet to integrate.

This news is particularly concerning for CSK, who are already missing key opener Devon Conway for the first half of the season due to injury.

Matheesha Pathirana Limps Off During Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh T20I

Concerns about Pathirana’s fitness arose during the second T20I between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh earlier this week. The young pacer was seen struggling with his hamstring while bowling and eventually left the field. This followed an incident in the previous game where he experienced cramps, requiring attention from the physio.

Grade 1 Hamstring Injury: Recovery Time Uncertain

While initial reports suggested a serious injury, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed a grade-1 hamstring strain, typically requiring a recovery period of a couple of weeks. This means Pathirana will definitely miss the IPL opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22nd.

IPL 2024: CSK may opt for Cautionary Approach

Even with a two-week recovery timeline, CSK might choose to be cautious with Pathirana. Rushing him back onto the field could risk aggravating the injury and causing a longer absence. This suggests Pathirana might miss the initial stages of the IPL season.

Mustafizur Rahman: A Potential Replacement?

Despite the setback with Matheesha Pathirana, CSK received some positive news. Their new recruit, Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman, has recovered from a head injury sustained during the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Mustafizur could potentially fill the void left by Pathirana, at least for the initial IPL matches.

CSK fans will be hoping for Pathirana’s swift recovery and a strong showing from Mustafizur Rahman as they begin their IPL title defense.
