Former India captain and legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble spoke with the under-19 boys attending the High Performance Camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bangalore. The BCCI shared glimpses of the interaction on their social media accounts with the caption, “One of India’s biggest match winners and former captain – Mr. @anilkumble1074 – interacted with the participants of the High Performance Camp for U-19 boys at NCA, Bangalore. The boys got to hear first hand from the legend on what it takes to have a long and successful career and how resilience and perseverance are recipes to success.”

Kumble, a renowned fearsome bowler, not only helped his side win many matches, but he also consistently showed tenacity throughout his career. Like the imposing wristspinners Bill O’Reilly and his hero Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Kumble chose a more aggressive strategy over the classic legspinner’s artistry. On India’s spin-friendly surfaces, especially, his deliveries were formidable obstacles for batters to overcome as they slashed through the air with speed, producing sharp bounce.

Kumble broke a number of records throughout the course of his successful but sometimes underrated career, thus cementing his place in Indian cricket history. His accomplishments kept rising, breaking Glenn McGrath’s record of 563 wickets in August 2007, and culminated in his much anticipated and moving Test century at The Oval, a prized accomplishment that had escaped him for 17 years and 118 games. He furthered his legacy in January 2008 by surpassing the 600-wicket mark.

Kumble made the switch to management in 2010 after being chosen as the head of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. He continued to contribute to the sport he cherished while serving an admirable three-year tenure. He took over as the Indian cricket team’s head coach in 2016 and guided them to the top spot in Test cricket. Despite this success, Kumble’s reign was short-lived once it became clear that several players were uneasy.
