Despite not scoring a bulk of runs in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), the focus of the series has always been on Virat Kohli. But at the Boxing Day Test match, the Australian media turned him from “King Kohli” to “Clown Kohli.” Why why? Well, the hosts fully backed their 19-year-old youngster Sam Konstas, who got shoulder-barged by Kohli, looking to show who is the boss here. The crowd at the MCG took against Kohli, who received boos and jeers upon his time on ground. Even when he walked back to the pavilion, he was treated a little angrily.
Kevin Pietersen bats for Virat Kohli at MCG
While Kohli has received flak for his antics on the field and 20% fine off the field, one former cricketer who has absolutely loved Kohli’s “theatre” is Kevin Pietersen. The Englishman knows a thing or two about dominating in Australia, having scored 8 fifties and 2 centuries Down Under. He purely backed Kohli’s actions and said that the entire Boxing Day Test would’ve been “boring” without the former Indian captain.
“Virat creating theatre down under! Let’s GO! Imagine how boring it would be without the showman! And he’s earned EVERYTHING with his runs over his career! Many would end their successful international careers with a 1/4 of what he’s achieved….,” said Pietersen while writing to his Twitter.
Pietersen claimed that many individuals would’ve retired by achieving even a quarter of what Kohli has achieved in his career. That might hold true, as Kohli has done it all in this sport (apart from winning the IPL, of course). With as many as 27296, including a mammoth 81 centuries and 141 fifties, Kohli has dominated batting charts left, right, and centre. However, this is also true that Kohli has had a horrible 2024. In fact, he has scored just 650 runs (his lowest since 2010) at a mere average of 22.41, his lowest-ever in international cricket.
