While Pakistan remains in contention to make the World Cup 2023 semifinals, their chances are extremely bleak. After a shocking upset against Afghanistan, fingers have started to get pointed at their skipper Babar Azam, and his captaincy skills. While Babar is just one of three Pakistani skippers to have a win percentage of 60%, his failure to win any trophies along with his current failure means that his spot as their skipper isn’t guaranteed. So, here are four players that can take over Babar Azam’s captaincy:
Option 1: Shaheen Afridi
While Shaheen Afridi hasn’t helmed the role of Pakistan skipper so far in his career, he boasts a great record in franchise cricket. The 23-year-old has done extremely well in the PSL (Pakistan Super League) by leading Lahore Qalandars to twin titles in 2022 and 2023 as their skipper.
The pacer has the best record as captain in PSL, winning 17 of the 25 matches he’s led the team in.
Option 2: Shadab Khan
Unlike Shaheen, Shadab Khan has led the Pakistan side albeit in just 6 matches. While Shadab has a 33% win rate in T20Is, his record in franchise cricket is better. In his 4-years as the captain of Islamabad United, the leg-spinner has a 23-20 record in PSL.
Option 3: Mohammad Rizwan
Similar to Shadab, Mohammad Rizwan has just led the Men in Green in two matches (losing both). However, Rizwan is one of the most successful captains’ in PSL history. He has a 24-12 win/loss record in his 2-year tenure as the skipper for the Multan Sultans.
