Aussie fast bowler Spencer Johnson was a relatively unknown name in world cricket until Tuesday. But during the IPL 2024 Auction in Dubai, his life changed completely, when he was bagged by Gujarat Titans for a massive INR 10 Cr. And what followed after that was a round of applause and a little bit of banter from his Brisbane Heat teammates.
As per a report, Johnson had never thought he would bag such a contract. He said, “I never thought I’d be in this situation … I wasn’t expecting anything,” as told to NCA Newswire, quoted as saying by Fox Sports. “I felt like I had the potential, (but) it was a question of whether I could get myself right,” he said.
“I’ve always had that inner belief, but it was more whether my body would let me (perform at the highest level).”
Now, Johnson will join fellow Aussie Matthew Wade, Kiwi Kane Williamson, and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, at the Gujarat Titans. Meanwhile, his huge pay cheque from IPL 2024 Auction, was an opportunity for Michael Neser, to pull his leg. To add to that, Neser also said, that finally Johnson was getting his due, after a series of injuries.
“His pockets are pretty heavy. All the boys are lining up for his shout of coffee this morning,” Neser said.
“Everyone knew how talented he was, it was just that injury after injury held him back, but he’s found that sweet spot now,” Neser said. “He’s had an incredible 12 months … (and) he’s been rewarded with a nice pay cheque.”
