Alex Hales chooses to play for KKR’s franchises in MLC & CPL over ECB’s The Hundred & T20 Blast

Alex Hales had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2023 and won't be playing for his county Nottinghamshire this season.

The England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) decision to promote their domestic competition has forced Alex Hales to leave Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club after 18 years. For the unaware, the ECB had stated that they won’t be granting No Objection Certificate (NOC) to centrally contracted players by the ECB or the counties.

The franchise cricket circuit grows bigger and bigger with each passing day. Hales had recently moved out of England to Dubai. At 36, he wishes to explore more money-making opportunities. By playing for Notts in the T20 Blast and the Trent Rockets in the Hundred, he won’t be able to do that.

Instead of playing in England, Hales will be signing a multiple-league deal with the Knight Riders Sports. He’ll play for the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the Major League Cricket (MLC) and Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He may even play in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and the yet-to-launched European T20 Premier League.

“The last 18 years playing at Trent Bridge for Notts have been an absolute pleasure, and it remains my favourite place in the world to play cricket. Some of my best memories have come in a Notts shirt, and some of my closest friendships in the game have been made in that home dressing room,” Hales said in a statement.

“Having spent more and more time playing around the world in recent years, heading back to Trent Bridge has always been something I’ve looked forward to. But given the current landscape of the global game as well as having recently moved abroad, unfortunately, I won’t be able to return this season… Hopefully, I will be able to return at some point in the future,” the statement further read.
