The BCCI, under the leadership of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, is embarking on a crucial mission: creating a pool of bowlers, wicket-keepers, and batters – who can thrive in the demanding environment of first-class cricket. This initiative aims to address a long-standing challenge in India cricket team, where finding bowlers, especially pacers who can consistently handle red-ball rigors has been an ongoing concern.
Proactive Measures by BCCI
The BCCI committee is actively scouting the country for promising talents as per Times of India. For instance, Khaleel Ahmed, previously absent from the first-class scene, was encouraged to participate in the Ranji Trophy for Rajasthan this season. Similarly, Delhi’s Mayank Yadav was identified but unfortunately missed the Ranji Trophy due to an injury. Additionally, discussions have been held with Arshdeep Singh regarding increasing his red-ball involvement.
Special Central Contracts for Fast Bowlers:
Further solidifying their commitment to building a strong bowling pool, the BCCI, following recommendations from the selection committee, introduced special central contracts for fast bowlers. This initiative aims to financially support and incentivize young talents like Umran Malik, Akash Deep (who recently debuted against England), Karnataka’s Vijaykumar Vyshak, Vidwath Kaverappa, and Yash Dayal.
Looking Beyond Fast Bowlers:
While the initial focus is on pace bowlers, the BCCI’s vision extends beyond. The committee is working towards identifying and nurturing a pool of wicketkeepers and spinners who can similarly withstand the challenges of first-class cricket.
Building a Sustainable Future for India Cricket Team
This comprehensive approach by the BCCI signifies a proactive attempt to address a potential vulnerability in India cricket team. By creating a robust pool of bowlers and wicketkeepers equipped for the rigors of first-class cricket, the BCCI is laying the foundation for a sustainable and successful future in red-ball cricket.
