Ahead of T20 World Cup, Chris Woakes reveals father’s death as reason for absence from cricket

Chris Woakes, who last played for the Sharjah Warriors in the International League T20 in February, has been a mainstay of the England team across formats, with over 200 international appearances.

Ahead of ICC T20 World Cup, England all-rounder Chris Woakes has revealed the reason behind his recent absence from cricket – the passing of his father in early May.

The 35-year-old hasn’t played for Warwickshire or the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season. Due to this, he was also ignored from England’s squad for the Twenty20 World Cup.

The seasoned all-rounder took to social media to share his grief and explain his decision to step away from the game.

Difficult Time for Chris Woakes

The last month has been the most challenging of my life,” Chris Woakes wrote. “Unfortunately, my Dad passed away at the beginning of May.”

Woakes emphasized the importance of spending time with his family during this difficult period. “We’re all obviously grieving and trying to get through what is undoubtedly the hardest moments in our lives.”

Cricket put on hold, Family takes priority

Chris Woakes acknowledged the immense pride his father took in his cricket career. However, he made it clear that family comes first. “It’s times like this that perspective is at its greatest,” he said. “I will be back playing cricket for Warwickshire, who my Dad loved dearly, when the time is right for me and my family.”
