Just after Kane Williamson, who hung up his captaincy boots for New Zealand in all formats, another captain has stepped down. Uganda’s captain, Brian Masaba, who led his country for five years, including the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, has decided to step down from his T20I captain post after the team failed to pass the group stages. Uganda failed to qualify for the Super 8.
Masaba led the team a total of 60 times from 2021 to 2024, where he took the team beyond the finishing line 45 times and lost just 12 games in total. Although Uganda doesn’t often enjoy competing with big teams, But it doesn’t diminish the achievements he has created over the years.
Led the team to their first T20 World Cup
Masaba has played 63 games, taking 24 wickets and scoring 439 runs, leading the team admirably. He has risen through the Under-19 side to captain the international camp and is nothing short of inspiring.
Uganda, known as the Cricket Cranes and surely emerging as the top African team in the cricket circuit, owes much to Masaba, who played a crucial role in their outstanding performance, winning five out of six games in the Africa region qualifier and securing a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024. Although the team struggled in the ongoing T20 World Cup, winning just one game against PNG, Masaba’s contribution over the years has been impeccable.
“There has been a lot of growth for me as an individual and lessons I’ve learnt about leadership and sacrifice, which will stay with me for the rest of my life”. Masaba said during farewell speech
