After Ashwin in Tests, will Washington Sundar edge out Ravindra Jadeja from India’s Champions Trophy squad?

Ravindra Jadeja's inclusion in India's squad for Champions Trophy will be challenged by the likes of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel

Ravindra Jadeja is undoubtedly one of India’s best all-rounders across formats. While he has retired from T20Is following the World Cup win earlier this year, he remains to be an integral part of the Test setup. But what about ODIs? And will the southpaw manage to find a spot in India’s squad for Champions Trophy? Is he efficient enough to make the cut despite facing a strong competition from his teammates?

Will Jadeja find a spot in Champions Trophy 2025 squad?

Ravindra Jadeja last played an ODI in the World Cup final against Australia in November 2023. At that time, he was considered one of India’s first-choice all-rounders in the squad, given his experience and ability with both bat and ball. However, a lot has changed over the last one year. More suitable replacements for the southpaw like Washington Sundar, Axar Patel have emerged, putting Jadeja’s position in India’s ODI squad at risk.

Sundar appears to be the front-runner to replace Jadeja in the ODI squad. The Tamil Nadu spinner, who managed to secure a spot in the side in IND vs AUS Test series in place of Ashwin, already has the experience of playing 22 ODIs in which he has managed to take 23 wickets. With the bat, he has scored 315 runs in the 50-over format so far. Another contender for Jadeja’s spot is all-rounder Axar Patel. In 60 ODIs, Axar has managed to score 568 runs and bag 64 wickets, making him another front-runner to replace Jadeja. Besides, India have also preferred Axar Patel over Jadeja in the past as well. With Sundar and Patel emerging as strong contenders to seal a spot in India’s XI at Champions Trophy 2025, Jadeja might face the axe. It is also pertinent to point out that Jadeja, like many of the other senior cricketers, would have just finished the IND vs AUS series when the selection for CT 2025 takes place. It would be wise for India to rest the all-rounder rather than put him to work immediately in the marquee event. Further, the likes of Sundar and Axar Patel are suitable replacements who warrant for a place in India’s XI.
