Afghanistan on Tuesday lost their first match of T20 World Cup 2024 when they were humbled by 104 runs by West Indies in their last group stage game. Afghanistan, who had a near-perfect T20 WC campaign up till now, faltered against Rovman Powell’s side.
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first in their last group stage game. Both sides had already qualified to the Super Eight stage and this was a game to keep the momentum going.
West Indies started the game on front-foot, with Johnson Charles and Nicolas Pooran attacking the Afghanistan bowlers with full might. Pooran scored 98 off 53 balls while Charles got out on 43 off 27 balls to ensure West Indies breached 200 runs. They ultimately finished at 218/5.

Chasing a huge target, Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz early and could not recover from the setback. Their middle order, which has been struggling right throughout the tournament, failed once again as they were all-out for just 114 runs. Ibrahim Zadran top-scored for the Afghans with 38. Obed McCoy took three wickets in his 3 over spell while Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie bagged two wickets each.
