The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has taken a proactive step to address their team’s fielding weaknesses by appointing experienced coach Shane McDermott as their new Fielding Coach. This decisive move comes just after their T20I loss to India, highlighting the board’s commitment to continuous improvement.

Shane McDermott, a seasoned professional with extensive coaching experience, is expected to join the team on February 1st, aligning perfectly with their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. He carries an impressive resume, boasting a High-Performance Level Three Coaching Certificate and a career spanning renowned teams like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and even Cricket Australia.

His expertise extends beyond mere titles. Shane McDermott has honed his skills through involvement in major ICC events like the 2023 Cricket World Cup and multiple T20 World Cups. Prior to joining Afghanistan, he served as Assistant Fielding Coach for Bangladesh and held similar roles with Sri Lanka’s Men’s team and their A team. Even within Cricket Australia, he has held crucial positions, showcasing his versatility and adaptability.

Shane McDermott: New Afghanistan coach

This strategic appointment aligns with the ACB’s recent decision to bring on Andrew Puttick as the new Batting Coach. Their ongoing search for a Performance Analyst and an S&C Trainer further underlines their dedication to building a well-rounded coaching staff capable of guiding the team to greater heights.

Arrival of Shane McDermott injects a surge of hope into the Afghanistan camp. His proven track record in raising fielding standards is expected to translate into positive results on the field. This, combined with the ongoing coaching revamp, paints a promising picture for the Afghan team’s future, where improved fielding and overall performance seem like achievable goals.

So, while the recent loss might sting, the appointment of Shane McDermott signals a clear intent from the ACB. They are determined to address their weaknesses, embrace professional guidance, and ultimately, pave the way for sustained success on the international stage. The journey might be long, but with strategic moves like this, the Afghan cricket team is heading in the right direction.
