Aakash Chopra suggests introducing bonus points in IPL 2025 as an incentive

Currently IPL doesn't have any bonus points system

The excitement for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) has risen. This is especially after the IPL 2025 schedule was released on Sunday. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a suggestion regarding the points system in the league. He has claimed that teams who play well and exceed the margin of victory by a threshold should be awarded bonus points.

Currently, the rules in terms of the point system are fairly simple. A win ensures 2 points while a no result ensures a point apiece for both teams. There are no draws as the game heads into super over till a winner is decided. Another important thing that comes into the discussion is the Net Run Rate (NRR).

Bonus points as an incentive?

Aakash Chopra argued that implementing a bonus points system can be a good thing. he claimed that NRR is good but it comes very late into the picture. Instead, he suggested that when a team wins by a certain threshold, the side should be awarded bonus points, this in turn showcases which team has performed well.

“I have a suggestion for the #TataIPL this season. Have a bonus point if the margin of victory exceeds a certain threshold. While NRR is a proven way to know who’s done better over a period of time, the exact advantage doesn’t register till very late. Bonus points is an incentive that tangible…immediate and tbh, effective too. Kya bolti public??,” Chopra wrote on social media.
