‘A lot’: Ex-England cricketer describes need for Kohli & Rohit in India’s T20 World Cup squad

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last played a T20I during the World Cup last year, where India lost in the semis to England.

Whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli be part of India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, is always on, the world seems to be divided as of now. The tournament will be played next year from June 4, in the West Indies and the United States, and India might just need the services of their most experienced players, feels former England cricketer Ravi Bopara.

In an interaction with the Times of India, he put it rather simply. He said, the team needs them ‘a lot’. “A lot. India will need their presence in the important tournament. They should be there and in good form. India would want them to score big runs. They scoring big runs and then others playing cameos can work well for India. You have got SKY (Suryakumar Yadav) there. He is going to be the most dangerous player in the Indian lineup. It is very important that these three fire.”

It is important to note that Virat and Rohit have not played in the T20Is for a year now, and it won’t be easy for them to make a comeback. Even in IPL, Rohit was replaced as the captain by Mumbai Indians, keeping the future in mind. Asked how difficult will it be for Hardik Pandya to step up, he said, “Rohit Sharma has made the MI side. That is the champion side. Now, Hardik will be leading that champion side.

“They have star players and game-changers. Hardik will be working with the best players. Apart from captaining the side, it will be important for Hardik to bat and bowl well. I hope he has a good tournament with both bat and ball and helps MI succeed and win the tournament. I wish him all the luck.”
