A decade long wait comes to an end: Sri Lanka secures first Test win in England since 2014

Sri Lanka clinches its first Test victory on English soil in 10 years, defeating England by 8 wickets and marking a great moment for Sri Lankan cricket.

Sri Lanka achieved a memorable victory against England in the fourth Test of the series at The Oval. The Sri Lankan side won the match by 8 wickets on Monday, marking an important moment in their cricketing history. This is the fourth win for Sri Lanka in England in 24 matches played till now.

It took 10 years for Sri Lanka to secure this remarkable win in England. Although they lost the series 2-1, this victory feels more like a rejuvenation of Sri Lankan Test cricket. The last time Sri Lanka defeated England was on 24th June 2014, making this victory even sweeter.

Sri Lanka’s last victory in England

The 2014 win was historic in itself. Sri Lanka posted 257 runs in their first innings, while England responded with 365 runs. Things looked tough for the Sri Lankans, but a brilliant 160-run knock from captain Angelo Mathews and a solid 79 from Mahela Jayawardene helped them set a target of 457 runs for England.

In England’s second innings, Moeen Ali fought back with a century, scoring 108 runs. However, Sri Lankan bowlers Dhammika Prasad, who took 5 wickets, and Rangana Herath, who grabbed 3, ensured a 100-run victory for their team.

10 years, 5 matches long wait

After that 2014 win, Sri Lanka had to endure a 10-year wait for another victory on English soil. They played five matches in England but failed to win any, losing four and drawing one. This recent victory finally broke the drought, marking a new chapter for Sri Lankan cricket.
