Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli finally had a successful ODI World Cup campaign with the bat. However, despite his record-breaking run, the former skipper failed to take the coveted World Cup trophy home. His crucial 54 off 67 balls in the World Cup Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium went in vain. After a successful tournament with the bat, let’s see 5 records broken by Virat Kohli in World Cup 2023.

Records broken by Virat Kohli in World Cup 2023

  • Most runs in a single edition of the World Cup: Having failed to cross the 500-run mark in the last three editions of the ODI World Cup, Kohli broke the record by scoring the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup. King Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s two-decade-old record (673 runs) by raking up 765 runs in 11 matches.
  • Most ODI centuries in history: making history in a knockout match, Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries in ODIs by hitting his 50th ton against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in the semifinals.

  • 2nd most runs in ODI World Cup history: Kohli started the campaign at 1030 runs, ranked outside the top 10 run scorers in ODI World Cup history. However, his record-breaking run saw him rise to the second spot, leading two-time World Cup winner Ricky Ponting by 52 runs and just behind Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli has 1795 runs in 37 matches in ODI World Cups.
  • 2nd most 50+ scores in international cricket: With his fifty in the World Cup Final, Kohli crossed Ponting’s tally of 217 50+ scores in international cricket. However, Kohli still needs 47 scores of fifty or more to get past the Little Master.
  • 2nd most 50+ scores in ODIs: during the IND vs SA match, Kohli closed down on another record of Sachin Tendulkar. After smashing his 49th ton and levelling up with the Master Blaster, Kohli also crossed Kumar Sangakkara to move to the second spot in most 50+ scores. With 122 50+ scores, Kohli needs just 24 scores of fifty or more to move past his idol.
