Ahead of the IPL 2024 auction in December, teams would be aiming to increase their IPL purse. One of the best ways to have money at the auction table is to release and rebuy players. This tactic is a bit dangerous and can come to bite you back, but at a mini-auction like the India Premier League 2024 one, it can work wonders for teams. With the retention and release window closing down, these are 5 expensive players IPL franchises may release and rebuy at the IPL 2024 auction.

5 expensive players IPL franchises might release and rebuy at IPL 2024 Auction

  • Sam Curran: The most expensive player in IPL history, did not bode well for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2023. Curran did well with the bat, scoring 276 runs at a strike rate of 135.96 while averaging 27.60. However, his main skill let him and PBKS down. The left-arm pacer picked up just 10 wickets in 14 innings to end the 2023 season.
  • Cameron Green: The all-rounder did well for the Mumbai Indians (MI) with the bat but failed to make his mark with the ball. A debut season with 452 runs at an average of over 50 and a strike rate of over 160 is great, but is it worth 17.5 crore? Moreover, Green managed to get just 6 wickets in 16 innings, a record he or MI would not like to look at.

  • Ben Stokes: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spent over INR 16 crore on the English Test skipper, but all they got was 15 runs in 2 matches and an 18-run over. It is safe to say that CSK will look to release an injury-prone all-rounder worth over 1 million dollars.
  • Harry Brook: Another expensive buy that did not fare well. The Sunrisers Hyderabad picked up Brook with great hope, but his inability to play spin saw him end his debut season with an average of 21.11 and a strike of 123.38. Although he scored a great ton, his returns were too scarce to compare with his price tag of INR 13.25 crore.
  • Lockie Ferguson: One of the fastest bowlers going around, may find himself being released ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. The Kiwi quick bowled just 46 balls in IPL 2023, picking up just one wicket at an economy of 12.52.
