30 days to go for World Cup Cup Squad submission, no end to injury crisis

Just 30 days remain for the World Cup 2023 Squad submission deadline and Indian Cricket Team sees no end to it's injury crisis

With just 30 days remaining for the submission of the ICC World Cup Squad, India’s injury crisis knows no bounds. KL Rahul is expected to be fit for the Asia Cup, but Shreyas Iyer faces a race against time to build on his fitness. This has caused a major headache for Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid who now has just a month to submit the Indian squad.

ICC has provided September 5 as the deadline for the submission. While in general the last date to submit the squad is 29th August, each team will get 7 days extra in the Support period. Therefore, September 5 is the deadline for submitting the squads.

ICC on WC Squad submission deadline:

“The initial squad submission deadlines at our tournaments are 30 days before the support periods start. The support periods start one week before the tournaments. Changes may be made before the support period without seeking permission, but once the support period kicks in, the Event Technical Committee needs to approve replacements,” ICC informed InsideSport.

India’s injury crisis is alarming. While the only good news is the return of Jasprit Bumrah. The ace speedster will get his taste of International cricket when he leads his side in a 3-match T20I series against Ireland. But for the other two important players, the BCCI is unsure.

It is expected that KL Rahul who is recovering from his hamstring injury will be fit for the Asia Cup, Shreyas Iyer on the other hand face a race against time to be ready for the Asia Cup. The duo who are currently recovering at the National Cricket Academy will join the Asia Cup 2023 camp at NCA from 24th to 29th August.

“Both will be in the camp. Even if KL or Shreyas are not fully fit, they are important part of the squad. So, both will be joining the camp”, a senior BCCI official informed InsideSport.

World Cup 2023: Where do India stand in injury crisis?

  • Jasprit Bumrah: The ace speedster is ready to take the field. Bumrah has been appointed as the captain of the second-string Indian team that will play a 3-match T20I series against Ireland.
  • KL Rahul: The wicket-keeping batter has recovered well but has not been 100% match-fit to make it to the India Squad for the Ireland series. He is continuing his recovery at the NCA and is expected to be back for the Asia Cup.
  • Shreyas Iyer: Iyer’s condition is touch and go at the moment as per various reports. The middle-order batter is not a part of the Ireland squad and faces a race against time to make it to the Asia Cup. Iyer began his batting practice at the NCA a couple of weeks ago and will be a part of the Asia Cup 2023 NCA Camp.
  • Rishabh Pant: Despite making remarkable progress since his near-fatal car crash in December, the young wicketkeeper batter is far away from regaining full fitness. He is expected to take 6-7 months more to return to fitness.
