3 teams that may target Steve Smith in the IPL 2025 mega auction

He is back! But for which team? It will be interesting to see, as Steve Smith has expressed his desire about playing in IPL once again in 2025. But which team will pick him?

Australian star batter Steve Smith looks eager to return to the IPL once again, especially after he recently shared his thoughts, stating that he would like to put his name in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Last seen in the IPL in 2021, Steve Smith has not had a particularly distinguished T20 history in recent years, but his current form could lead to a triumphant return. Leading the Washington Freedom to their first MLC championship in 2024, the former Australian captain topped the team’s run statistics.

As the third-highest run-scorer in the competition, Smith massive 336 runs at a strike rate of 148.67. His performance has sparked discussions about an IPL comeback.

Has played for several teams in the IPL, including the Rising Pune Supergiants, Pune Warriors India, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals. With over 103 matches of experience, he has also contributed with his leg spin when needed. In total, he has played 103 matches and scored over 2,485 runs with an average of 34.51. Now, as he eyes a comeback, let’s see which teams might put their money on this Aussie batter.

Teams that may target Steve Smith at IPL 2025

Rajasthan Royals

Speaking about the first team, how could it not be the best team? The Rajasthan Royals are surely the team that will look to get this player back. As mentioned, he has already played for this team and even captained it from the front. While it is possible that he may not get the captaincy, as Sanju Samson is doing a job calmly, he will certainly be part of the leadership group, which could increase the team’s chances. Currently, they are known as ‘chokers’, performing well in the first half but gradually sliding to the bottom, which has become a new trademark for RR. They will be keen to change this, and a precise leader and batter like him could be the key mix on this team.

Lucknow Super Giants

Another new team, but it could unfold like a film story when it comes to LSG. In 2022, they made the playoffs, in 2023, they did the same, but suddenly in 2024, they finished seventh with seven losses and seven wins. On top of that, captain KL Rahul clashed with LSG owner Sanjay Goenka, which could potentially lead to KL Rahul not being retained by the franchise. This means the team might not only lose a captain but a leader as well. With this, Smith could come in or might already be considered.

Historically, Sanjiv Goenka has shared a decent bond with the Aussie star, as seen with the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) in 2017. The franchise named Smith as captain, replacing MS Dhoni, which was a bold move, but it nearly paid off as the team reached the final, though they lost to the Mumbai Indians. Now, with KL Rahul’s return looking unlikely, there’s no doubt that this team will raise their hand in the IPL mega auction.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals and Smith have had an on-and-off season together, but the franchise could benefit from him in the new season. There are rumors that Rishabh Pant may lose the captaincy as DC management might look to experiment, and they won’t find a better face than Smith. His calm and cool captaincy has served him well in the past for all the IPL franchises he’s played for. He also plays a crucial role in anchoring the innings at the top of the batting order. If things go well, he could be the one leading the Delhi franchise from the front.
