3 reasons why RTM should not be in IPL 2025 mega auction

Right to Match (RTM) policy is currently a topic of discussion, and not for good reasons, as many believe it should not be included in the IPL 2025 mega auction. But why?

RTM in the IPL is a facility that allows franchises to retain one top-quality player via the 3+1 retention rule. As where 3 players are retained by the franchise through the retention policy and 1 can be retained via this rule. RTM means that if the franchise chooses not to retain the player directly and instead opens him for bidding, they can then match the price at which the player is sold during the auction in order to retain him at that price.

However, this rule has been under scrutiny for being unfair to many. Both current and former players have criticized the RTM facility. Well the best example is R. Ashwin, who has stated that this rule can lead to players being undervalued. But why is there such a fuss over this rule, and why should it not be included in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction? Here are a few reasons behind this.

Reasons why RTM should not be in IPL 2025 mega auction

Unfair to players

As mentioned, the RTM has already come under scrutiny, with many prominent players criticizing it. The main criticism is that it is unfair to players. Ravichandran Ashwin has criticized the RTM rule, saying it imposes unfair restrictions on players and limits their opportunities in the auction. Also, many suggested that predetermined contract conditions should be introduced, allowing franchises to use the RTM card only if the price reaches a certain amount.

Few IPL teams question fairness in RTM policy

Not only Players, but the franchises as well have expressed their concerns about the 3+1 retention policy, demanding more flexibility. According to them, the policy hinders team growth. And especially when only four players can be retained, with one of them through the RTM card. They believe it would be better to allow more than four retentions and discard the RTM card altogether. This issue was discussed in the recently held IPL auction meeting last month, and now all eyes are on the BCCI to see, what action they will take on it.

Unfair advantage for established teams

Teams with a history of successful player management could be seen using this policy to their advantage. However, for many newer teams struggling with player management, the RTM card may not be used effectively. On the other hand, teams with a proven track record in player management can retain top performers using the RTM card. There’s no question that removing the RTM card would promote a more competitive and balanced auction, giving all teams equal chances to build stronger squads.
