3 Reasons why MS Dhoni will retire after IPL 2024

Dhoni has not yet provided any indication about retiring after this season, but there definitely are reasons to believe that he might do so. Let's take a look.

Indian Premier League 2024 might be the last time Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni walks out on a competitive cricket pitch. The highly-successful cricketer might decide to hang up his boots after this season’s IPL. Now, it should be noted that MS Dhoni has not yet provided any indication about retiring after this season, but there definitely are reasons to believe that he might do so. Let’s look at three reasons why Dhoni is likely to retire after IPL 2024.

Age

MS Dhoni is definitely not getting any younger day by day. He will turn 43 this July and the rigours of T20 cricket might begin to be too much for Dhoni to take. Most of India’s past generation of cricketers were well on their way to the commentary box or stints in coaching at the age Dhoni is at the moment. Dhoni is already asking too much from his body playing top-level T20 cricket at this age, it remains to be seen how long he can continue this.

Injury

Dhoni had undergone a knee surgery after the end of IPL 2023. The injury had bothered him throughout the previous season. Dhoni had flown to Mumbai from Ahmedabad after the final on May 29 and consulted renowned sports orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala to undergo the surgery. The knee has been Dhoni’s Achilles’ heel and might bring an end to his cricket career after this season.

Other Hobbies

Dhoni is a man of many interests and he might decide to pursue some of them after hanging up his boots. The former Indian captain has a close association with Indian Armed Forces. Dhoni holds an honorary rank in the Indian Territorial Army. He is also a qualified paratrooper. Apart from the Army, Dhoni’s love for farming is also not a big secret. So it’ll be not a surprise if he decided to devote more time to these activities after IPL 2024.
