The BCCI and all the IPL franchises recently held a meeting to discuss various topics, ranging from the retention policy to the duration of the upcoming mega auction for IPL 2025. The anticipation among the teams is palpable, as they prepare for the mega auction in 2025. One key point of discussion was a particular rule that garnered significant attention, especially due to the involvement of two prominent names, the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings and their star player, MS Dhoni.
Anticipated IPL rule changes
Apart from this, the retention policy and the tenure of the mega auction were also central topics. Most of the IPL owners believe that having a major mega auction every three years creates a disruption in the team environment. However, there was some disagreement on this topic from the Delhi Capitals, who believe that there is no need for a mega auction. Nonetheless, they clarified that they will support whatever decision is deemed best for everyone. With many teams and differing opinions, let’s take a closer look at the rules that are likely to be introduced ahead of IPL 2025.
First IPL rule change
One major rule that the Chennai Super Kings want to reintroduce is a rule that existed from 2008 to 2021. This rule stated that if a player had retired from international cricket for five or more years, they would be classified as an uncapped player. This interesting suggestion was put forward by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, with many speculating that it could allow MS Dhoni to be retained through this route. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, it is also true that no other IPL team wants this rule to be reinstated.

Second IPL rule change
IPL CEO Hemang Amin suggested a possible change for the upcoming season, which involves allowing capped players to lower their base price. This change could help top players who are at risk of going unsold. Additionally, there was a debate among teams about changing the duration of the mega auction. Most teams believe that an extension is required to ensure stability, while on the other hand, Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal opposed the idea of a mega auction in 2025.
Third IPL rule change
Last but certainly not least is the IPL Retention Policy. In recent days, this policy has taken center stage, as many franchises want to discuss the number of retentions allowed. According to the current IPL retention rules, a franchise can retain a maximum of three Indian players and two overseas players before the auction. Reports indicate that some franchises want to increase this number to seven or eight.
